Magainins are a family of potent antimicrobial cationic peptides that possess antimicrobial activity, anti-tumour activity, although the anticancer mechanism is still unclear. We investigated the effects of Magainins on apoptosis induction in human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells. Lapachone, an anticancer drug, was used as a positive control. The results demonstrated that Magainins inhibited proliferation of HeLa cells in a dose-dependent manner and had greater efficacy than that of lapachone. IC50 values of the test compound ranged from 1.2±0.1 to 5.5±0.86 M for 2 to 24 h time periods.
